Road Testing the Red Bull SPECT Pace

Recently we teamed up with Red Bull SPECT Eyewear to give away a pair of their brand new performance sunglasses. Luckily, we also got our hands on a pair to test out!

Here’s what we got up to!

We tested the Red Bull SPECT Pace – Matte Black / Bronze Mirror (Pace-003). They come with an awesome zip-up case, microfibre bag and a replacement clear lens for low light days or night riding.

Accessories include a zip-up case, bonus lens and a microfibre bag

The first thing you notice about the Pace is the weight. They weigh in at only 30 grams so they give a featherweight feel on your face. Being able to adjust the temples and nosepiece really helps you to customise the fit, especially with a helmet on.

Their party piece is the Patented Floating Lens System which works like a treat on rough country lanes!

“By detaching the lens from the frame, the effect of a free-floating lens is created. The flexible properties of the frame allow the lens to bounce up and down freely when subjected to shocks. The technology thus takes weight off the wearer’s nose for ultimate comfort.” – Red Bull SPECT

Floating Lens
The Floating Lens System makes a huge difference on rougher terrain

With a big nose like mine, this new tech is hugely appreciated! It made a massive difference when riding over rougher tarmac and through potholes. My feeling would be it is a perfect choice for cyclocross or gravel rides!

Lenses

The clarity of the lenses on the Pace is excellent and really rivals that of some of the hard hitting brands of the sports eyewear world. This comes from SPECT eyewear. Working with a brand with over 40 years experience in design and manufacture of lenses, you can really feel the attention to detail.

I used the Red Bull SPECT Pace on a bright sunny day in early May and they did not disappoint. The bronze mirror on the pair I tried gives a slight contrast boost which was most welcome when riding through shadows. The lens is dark enough to give great protection on a bright sunny day and also offers enough contrast for when the sun gets lower.

Our Opinion?

If you’re after a new pair of cycling sunglasses then they are a great choice! All of the tech has slightly flown under the radar but it really comes into its own when you have them on your face. Not many performance frames come packed full of tech for this price and even less come with a big case and a replacement low-light lens!

There are some drawbacks, Red Bull SPECT isn’t the most fashionable brand out there and we don’t yet have optimised lenses but if you can get past that then there’s a new kid on the block that’s waiting to be explored!

With prices starting at only £111.99 for the Pace and Flow models, you’d be hard pushed to find a performance frame with this spec for less!
