Oakley Field Jacket and Flight Jacket Product Insight

May 2020

Whether it is online, or in print, I love to read and research about what is new and happening in the world of cycling, especially when it comes to kit!

During 2018, I started to see images and snippets of information about the Oakley Field Jacket and Flight Jacket. The pre-release photos confirmed both forthcoming glasses were large in format and striking in appearance. This is something I really like from both an aesthetics and performance perspective. Combine this with a long-standing positive experience of Oakley glasses, and my interest was already sky high!

After a little more product research, I learned that the design of the new glasses had been influenced by Oakley’s study of rider’s eye movement. This identified a potential improvement in uninterrupted view if the upper area of the frame was moved from its usual position.

It was not long before I was trying them both for fit and checking out the features. Visually, the two are quite different, both having their own individual, contemporary style. The Field Jacket has a full frame, and the Flight Jacket has a half frame, positioned at the base of the lens.

Oakley have also incorporated a slick way ventilate the glasses. At the front of the nose bridge there is small lever or switch (Oakley call this the “Advancer”); flick this down, and the frame is drawn forward. This enables the rider to switch additional airflow on and off, to control cooling and/or ventilation.

The arms of both the Field and Flight Jacket can be adjusted in length. This is achieved by switching sections of the arm to suit your fit. These are supplied with the glasses.

I have a medium to large face, and the fit and feel of both the Field and Flight Jacket felt very good and secure, with no need for me to fine tune. The Advancer is easy to locate, and after a few attempts, locating and switching is no problem,

So which did I go for? My heart, and the more flamboyant side of me said Flight Jacket, but the pure versatility of the Field Jacket won on the day…..well at least for now!

For me, the Field Jacket is close to the Flight Jacket for uninterrupted vision, plus it has a prescription lenses option. Changing lenses is relatively quick and easy.

To purchase the Oakley Field Jacket in a prescription lenses option, I initially contacted RxSport UK by telephone, and talked through my product choice, ordering and anticipated time to delivery.

Placing an order via their website was also extremely easy, and my prescription details are now saved to make future ordering even easier (details can be updated any time, if necessary).

My glasses arrived just in time for a week-long trip of cycling in Wales. The Field Jackets with prescription lenses (Black Iridium Polarised) performed perfectly, and almost one year on, my experience remains the same.

I have recently bought another set of Field Jackets, incorporating Oakley Transition prescription lenses. It is early days, but my initial impression is, they are excellent.

In my next article, I will give a more detailed insight in to my two sets of Field Jackets, as well as deliberate whether I should add a set of Oakley Racing Jacket’s to my collection?
